About
Andrea Pistolesi
Observing how landscape becomes culture, memory and belief.
Italian photographer, author and documentary filmmaker. Forty years of work on people, belief systems, and the relationship between communities and the places they inhabit, published in more than 180 books.
Where the method comes from
Born in Florence. Studied geography, then began working as a photographer. The sequence explains the method: direct observation, field research and long engagement with a place were the discipline first, and became the photography afterwards.
How the work is made
A subject is chosen and then followed for years — long enough that the first photographs and the last are separated by a decade or two. It accumulates until it is a body of work rather than a set of pictures. Then it is published.
Believers took twenty years and six volumes. The Last Frontiers took twenty. US Highway 1 was shot in 1992 and reissued thirty years later. The duration is not a stylistic preference; it is the only way the subjects in question become legible.
Working method
Geography precedes interpretation. Observation precedes explanation. Projects begin with questions rather than conclusions, and narration is used only for what the images cannot carry themselves.
The same approach now extends into documentary film, where each frame is composed to stand as a photograph before it is asked to stand as a shot.
Published
More than 180 titles: one hundred and seven books with publishers — Touring Club Italiano, Mondadori, Bonechi and others in Italy and abroad — nearly all as sole author. The most recent is Castello di Verrazzano, published by OperaOmnia in 2026.
A further seventy-four titles are self-published through PadPlaces, founded in 2010 as one of the first photography-based self-publishing applications for the iPad and now an independent imprint for documentary photography and long-form visual projects — the route taken when a project needs to stay under the author’s control.
Photographs and reportage have appeared in National Geographic Traveler, Time, Smithsonian, The New York Times, Travel + Leisure and Geo, and across four decades of the European editorial press — Meridiani, Bell’Europa, Bell’Italia.
Fine art prints, produced to Digigraphie standards in certified editions, are at andreapistolesi.org.
Films with Global Conservation
Five documentary films made with Global Conservation, which works to protect endangered national parks and World Heritage sites in Southeast Asia, the Caucasus and the Balkans. Global Conservation carries the production and opens the parks and the patrols. The filming is mine on all five; two are also my cut, and the other three were edited by William J McKay.
Commissioned work
The IVECO calendars of 2000 and 2001, and the Epson calendar of 2017.
Forty-one short destination films across Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, made for ASCO Travels: a general introduction to each country and separate films on the places inside it — temples and ruined cities, river systems, coasts and capitals. Photography for the Paukan river cruise fleet in Myanmar, and for hotels and resorts across Southeast Asia.
Commissions are taken selectively and are a resource rather than a direction. The projects come first.
Lives and works between Italy and Asia.
The five properties
Five properties, one body of work. The Record, this site, is the complete account — every project, story and film, made to be checked. Portfolio is the selection made for commissions. Archive is where photographs are licensed. Prints are the fine art editions of twelve. Books are the titles published under the PadPlaces imprint.
They are separate because the questions are separate: what has he done, can he do this job, may I use this image, may I own this print, may I read this book.
